Thomas Heatherwick is a well-known British architect, famous for his innovative designs, spontaneity and brilliance throughout various design projects. His most unique project, the Seed Cathedral pavilion, amazed thousands of people and won a competition in the Shangai World Expo in 2010. The Seed Cathedral represents the relationship between cities and nature by highlighting the fact that the world’s first park was made in England, and how the Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank in Sussex, UK has a huge seed collection aiming to preserve 25% of the world’s wild plant species. The Seed Cathedral consisted of a total of 250,000 seeds and were all showcased through 60,000 acrylic rods, each tip of the rods had a small amount of seeds on display.

This project aims to share the life of Thomas Heatherick, his famous works, and highlight the significance of the Seed Cathedral. The challenge was to present this information in a visually engaging way that allows viewers to better understand his innovative design philosophy and contributions to architecture.
the solution
The best way to showcase Thomas Heatherwick, and his work is by creating a museum exhibition for it. As the viewer enters this exhibition, they will be handed a book to read along while exploring the room.
A small pamphlet sized book was created that shows detailed imagery and thorough information all while giving the reader a sophisticated experience through visual design. The book comes with a specialized die-cut sleeve highlighting the cover’s words “Heatherwick” and the back cover, “Innovation”, which reflects his well-known design style.
The second design consists of a 3D model built to represent a scaled museum exhibition concept. As the viewer enters the room, they are presented by a miniature building model of the Seed Cathedral, and the wall behind it is covered with what the interior of the pavilion looks like: acrylic rods with seeds at the ends while light from the outside shines in. The remaining walls describe some of the same information as the book and as they exit the room, they can learn about all of Heatherwick’s other architecture designs.
