Ecuador’s diverse ecosystem is known for its beautiful tropical insects but one major downfall is the fact that Ecuador’s current entomological collections exist almost exclusively as closed academic repositories.The general public and international tourists lack access to engage and interact in spaces that celebrate this immense biodiversity, creating a severe gap in local environmental education and conservation awareness.
The Problem
By creating a public museum dedicated to Ecuador's tropical insects, this project aims to make entomological education more accessible to both local communities and international visitors. The museum seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research and public engagement by creating an interactive space that inspires curiosity, environmental awareness, and appreciation for Ecuador's biodiversity.
objective
Equatorial Insectarium aims to highlight the ecological importance of insects and their role in pollination, decomposition, and food webs through the use of live exhibits, and educational programs. The museum’s goal is to inspire curiosity about entomology and promote insect conservation efforts in Ecuador and beyond.
“Equatorial” was used as it’s title for many reason. Ecuador physically lies on the world’s equator and its name is also literally translates to ‘”equator” from Spanish. Then “Insectarium” refers to a public museum, exhibit, or zoo dedicated to displaying live insects and other terrestrial arthropods.
Through the use of a visually cohesive brand identity, the use of logos, signage, way-finding and promotional products, Equatorial Insectarium is then set apart from other competing institutions.
